Recently, I read a piece on Hostel Food and the Love-Hate relationship we share with it by Mr. Vir Sanghvi.
He was a Mayo student. Similarly, I was in a proper boarding school for two years whereas my friends were enjoying their Junior College phase of bunking and mocking teachers. While, I was still going to SCHOOL in Uniforms. The only difference was we had skirts for our Uniforms and sadly, no one to flaunt those skirts at because it was a GIRLS school. My life turned around a tom-boy girl from a co-education school to a only girls school. I felt like I was cheated or tricked or something. Anyways, I agree with Mr. Sanghvi when he said we, students, had a Love-Hate relationship with our Hostel Food.
Birla Balika Vidyapeeth [BBVP] (My School's name) has been serving since 1980's Rajma on Monday for lunch and Yellow Kadi with Pakodas on Tuesday my two favorite luncheons till now and forever. How do I know since 1980's even when I was there in 2004? World is so small sometimes I cannot even believe. When I was in US of A, I met a Music teacher who taught in BBVP in 1987 and even she remembered the lunch Menu for Monday and Tuesday; Rajma and Yellow Kadi with Pakodas, respectively. Btw, Her favorite too.
7:30 to 8:30 am Breakfast: Dal Kachori/ Poha/ Upma with Diluted Milk+Bornvita or Diluted Chai
10:30 am Mid-Snacks: BHONDA (Vada without the pav) / Biscuits
1:30 pm LUNCHEON
7:30 pm Dinner: You will be served the BBVP famous Black Lentils and Some veggies with oil pouring out.
I hated Dinners. Till now, if see that Black lentils in the menu anywhere on table I instantly get a gag reflex.
Luncheons were always lavished and I liked them. I would look forward to it maybe because I was really hungry or whatever.
After a lot of request and begging, outside food would come inside the campus premises on weekends where we could buy the Pilani-Famous "Fried Maggi". I swear to god, after eating "Fried Maggi" so many times I don't enjoy the regular Maggi anymore. I have lost my taste for Plain Maggi. I just cannot have it as it not as good as "Fried Maggi".
My first encounter with "Fried Maggi" was like a revelation. We were allowed to go out of our campus only once per month that also under supervision. My room mate took me to BLUE MOON Restaurant and she ordered "Fried Maggi" with "Mid-Night Beauty" Shake. I thought she was crazy but when I had it. I went crazy nuts for that Maggi. I had one more plate and this time I didn't wanna share at all. The milk shake was also so good that I am salivating even while writing about it.
No, it was not devoid of good food that made us go bonkers over "Fried Maggi" and Milkshakes, they are still the one of the best food items I have ever had.
I have not known any Pilani person till now who would not brag about the "Fried Maggi" and the Milkshakes from Connaught Place in Pilani. Yes, we call the only food area in BITS-Pilani Campus just one lane as "Connaught Place" or CP.
I wish I knew the recipe for that Fried Maggi and I wish I could get it here in Mumbai.
